Mame Nano Protein Skimmer

I am new to the hobby and have a 10 gallon nano tank, does anyone have any experience with this skimmer? Also are there any other suggestions for a budget,quiet, simplistic yet efficient skimmer? I'm going for a minimalistic look, I need a very quiet skimmer, I like the collection reservoir that this skimmer offers.

IMO you cannot beat a Mame Skimmer for Nano tanks! They've been around for years. Proven tried and true. Can't get any simpler [emoji2]

How's the quality of skim? Is it a set it and forget it skimmer? My only gripe about them is replacing the airstone. Mame says every 3-4 months but most say every month

I just installed one last week and it's pulling a dark tea. I have only had to adjust the air once. I don't imagine I will have to touch it until I am ready to change the diffuser. A limewood diffusers life can be extended by placing it in the microwave for a few seconds. Water will boil out and clear the pores. I've been doing this for years. Also get a good pressure pump like a Luft pump that can handle back pressure.

I really like it so far and it looks great in my tank. I'm really not that worried about spending a couple of bucks every couple of months on a diffuser. I ordered a some extra when I ordered the skimmer so I'm set for a while. There's a guy on ebay that makes them in any size you want, and I hear they are good quality, but I may stick with the Mame ones just because they look cool.

Just my personal opinion but I would not spend $98.00 on a product that I could build myself for more then half that. And it doesn't even come with an air pump?!

Just came across this and checked out ReefBuilders write up on this skimmer. IMO, I'm with AdamNC. If you have a local reef club I am sure that someone can help build something very similar and a little less fragile for less money. Also there are better skimmers out there for nano tanks.

All depends on what you plan on keeping as far as corals. If you plan on doing anything like a SPS tank you'll be better served with a better skimmer (IMO). BTW, I have years of experience with nanos and have been keeping them since before there was a such thing.

While I have built them from soda bottles. If this is for a main display tank and will be inside the DT where everyone may see it. One might want a nice clean one like the Mame version. While I have been keeps reefs for over 30 years I do like nice equipment even if I could make something it is never as clean looking as an injection molded piece or in the case a glass blown piece

I can't blow glass and I don't want a plastic water bottle in my tank.

I know this thread is old but do any of you know the size of the airstone in the Mame Skimmer? I purchased one today and wanted to order a couple extra stones also. Thanks guys.
