Hi all,

My biota mandarin that i've had over 2 years now has been acting a bit odd over the last 2 days. He's alert but off his food and just content to hang out and not really move around much, he also seems to be breathing pretty heavy. I feed heavily with HUFA/vitamin enriched frozen mysis/brine/mussel/cockle several times a day and spend time targetting the mandarin so he gets plenty, he also has a baby brine feeder which is kept topped up each day but hasn't been using it over the last couple of days.

It's been in my 300g for around 3 months which was set up with all dry rock (my established, pod-ridden rock is just coming to the end of a fallow period in my 90 and will added to the 300 next week), I've added pods several times but they don't seem to survive particularly well, either that or my angels snaffle them first but regardless he is fat and usually very active.

My clown and dotty have internal parasites which I am treating with GC/focus laced food once per day, perhaps the mandarin could be having an adverse reaction to the meds?

Anyone else experienced anything similar with a seemingly fat and healthy mandarin? The only thing I can liken it too is when he used to try and eat bristleworms in my 90, he would get spiked in the mouth and go off food for a day or 2 but was fine once the spines worked there way out, but there are no bristleworms in this tank as yet on account of the dry rock.

I know many mandarin threads are concerning skinny, starving fish but that is not the case here, I spend a lot of time and effort making sure this fish is well fed, particularly with the limited pod supply in the 300g and he is still pretty chunky.

Thanks

Nick

Got a pic of him?
Best pic I can get on crappy camera phone. He has no obvious marks or injuries, I do suspect that my Qt protocol has failed and I have let white spot into the tank but I'd be surprised if the mandarin was affected, although I guess it could be in his gills, everyone else is fine, just the occasional suspicious spot on my blueline or kole tang.

Thanks

Nick

Hmmmm...he looks good...bit breathing does seem labored.
The meds were bound to food so.shouldnt cause any o2 drop...
What type.of pods...copepods are prefered.over amphipods.
Tanks not showing any ammonia?

Yeah O2 should be fine, I have gyres blasting the surface, 2 overflows with 12000lph sump turnover and large skimmer. I haven't tested ammo in a while but nitrates are 5-10 and temp and pH are stable. I shouldn't have any ammonia but I will test just in case. Everyone else seems happy (majestic/blueline angels/kole/clowns/bangaii/orchid dotty)

Thanks

Nick

Sorry missed off the part about pods, I have added several batches of tigger pods but tbh I don't think they have lived that long even when slowly acclimated but they could just be really spread out

He could have caught internal parasites from your clown. I know that can cause a lack of appetite. If that’s the case as long as he’s eating the medicine laced food he should feel better in a week or two

That's definitely a possibility although his poop has been pretty normal, not white and stringy like my clown and dotty. I'm keeping up the GC food anyway so like you say hopefully that will resolve it of that's the issue. Thanks

He's alert but really lethargic and ignoring food still. I have some fw mollies that I have been acclimating to salt over the last few days which I will be adding to the tank as canaries to see if there is indeed white spot or another disease present, if so I'll likely pull all the fish out and treat in QT.

It would seem odd though that out of all the fish in the tank the mandarin would be showing the worst effects of any parasites but I guess anythings possible!

Hes not even looking around...:(
Does e show any interest in the gc laced food if you put it in front of him?

No interest in food at all, his eyes follow me, I put a net near him to see how he would react and he bolted off so that's a good sign at least, although it would have been handy being able to catch him.

The more I look at him the more I think he may have Ich, I can see a couple of spots on him which don't look like the usual sand grains stuck to his slime coat, could be wrong though. If he's still bad tomorrow all fish are coming out and back into QT.

Very frustrating as I QT'd everything before adding to this tank but also had a fowlr with ich at the same time, it was in a separate room but I guess I have cross contaminated.

Let us know how you make out ....
He's dead this morning, I'm absolutely gutted have put a lot of time and effort into this fish over the last 2.5 years. Feel super guilty for messing up the QT process.

His breathing had escalated but I managed to catch him last night and put him in a bucket with a heater airstone and CP, I guess I got to him too late.

RIP Malcolm

Thanks

Nick

The only visible sign is one white spot on his 'shoulder', visible on the 2nd pic but his gills must have been loaded. Other than that he lost a bit of weight as he hasn't eaten in the last few days but otherwise seemed healthy.
