All,

I am starting a 50g lowboy with a trigger 34 sump. I will running a fuge and doseing photo to keep up a stable pod population.

Do you think it would be possible to keep a flame angle for the first year then add a mandarin goby around the 1 year mark? I have a feeling that they would be competing too much for pods. These would be the only fish I want.

Are they the only fish you’d be keeping? Have you considered making a mandarin dragonet feeder? Or training the dragonet to feed on pellets in addition to pods?

I have that combo in a bigger tank with other fish, I would add the mandarin first and see if your tank copes, I call 50G tight for a flame angel.

Thanks to both of you. I think i will stay away from the flame and get some blennies instead.

I have a huge pod population and a target feeder for the mandrins, but I have noticed that the male mandrin is now also grabbing some of the grated shrimp for the batfish if they are close to where he hangs out with the females.

Hi Najer, do you still have the flame angel and the mandarin coexisting? I have experience with both flame angels and mandarins, but recently put them together and both mandarins died. I wanted to ask you if you have had long term success (1 + year) with this combo. I am suspicious of the flame because it exhibits territorial tendency and seemed to be hovering near the mandarins. Flame also actively eats pods and seems to be a competitor to the mandarin. Although I did not see any blatant aggression from the flame angel towards the mandarin except the occasional brushing up against.
My second question is if you have a fox face. I don’t have alot of experience with fox face but it does seem like mysterious deaths occur in tanks with fox faces. Just wondering if anyone else is also suspicious of fox faces in general. I know they are supposedly venomous but if anyone has actually had mysterious death that they think maybe attributable to fox face.
Thanks.

With that logic, all fish would competing for pods with a mandy. Pretty much all fish will eat pods if they are hungry enough.

Primarily, angels are omnivorous. Meaning they eat meat, and plant material. The many I have owned over the years, pick on algae off the rocks, and wait for their meaty treats when I fed them.

Never seen any angel fish actively hunt for pods.

My flame died a couple of years ago, unknown cause but I think it was something to do with a convict tang, the flame and mandarin were together for about 4 years.
I do have a fox face and the only fish I saw it take a dislike to was a midas blenny.
