I just added one of these guys and I'm wondering if I should have brought in a pair.
Always looking to provide the best environment for them.
How social are these guys?

Fish of the same sex will fight it out if I remember correctly. But a pair of fish will coexist, and breed if in the right environment (lots of food, relatively tall tank). Mostly they're focused on eating. and eating. and eating more.

I bought a pair. They sometimes see each other and the male puts up is flag. However, the female ignores him. Hmmm ......very familiar....biological response. Ha ha.

They can coexist in a mated pair, but adding one is probably safer to make sure there are enough pods. Mine is so focused on eating that I’m not sure he would even notice another in the tank.

what size tank/sump and how much rock do you have? A single dragonet will eat hundreds of pods in a day. A single bottle of reef nutrition carries 2000-3000 if i remember correctly. You will need to seed heavily, before even adding one, make sure they are established before you add the second as they will decimate them.

I have a female psychedelic and a male scooter. Ive had the male about 2 years give or take and the female will be a year next moth. They are a pair videos below, the male will defend the female so she can eat, which will cause some smaller fights. I have these two in my 120. I add pods monthly.

When i first got the female and they became a thing after she came out of hiding. Notice the male defending the female from the snowflake on the right. He also wont eat by the female.

And this is them a few weeks ago before my water change. This is the male defending the female from my lawnmower. I do not think they can breed since they are different but they are in the same family, would be some funny babies LOL.

So you could possibly do it, if you had a large enough tank, have it established, and get pods monthly or even bi weekly depending on consumption.

For Mandarin pair you must have the following:
1. Large enough tank with plenty of food.
2. Not only you need a male and a female, the male must be larger than the female or else she will beat him up.

I haven't heard anywhere that you Need to have a mated pair. Is this true.

Most fish don't "need" to be in mated pairs. off the top of my head, I can't think of any fish common to the reef aquarium that people say "need" to be in mated pairs, which also include mandarins. So you can get by with just a single fish.
