I went to do a water change and found this spot on my mandarin goby. He was okay yesterday. Sorry for the photo quality, I didn't have time to clean the glass first, he likes to hide most of the day. I'm getting ready to test the water now before I do the water change, but any idea what it could be or what I can do?

How long have you had him? Any new additions? Do you QT?

We've had him for around 3 months. He's swimming normally and eating... No new fish but we added a new zoa and a jack-o-lantern leptoseris 3 days ago. I fresh water dipped the zoa because we've picked up bristle worms before but I wasn't sure if I should with the Jack-o-lantern so I didn't. We QT fish but not usually coral because my QT tank has weak lighting.

I do have 2 anemone but he is usually smart enough to stay away from them.. I was wondering if it may be a burn.

Also, my ammonia and nitrite were 0, nitrate was 20, ph was 8.2. Did a 20% water change.

Looks like a bacterial infection.. he’s going to need antibiotics in a QT. Do you have any meds on hand?
No but I can get some tomorrow morning or I can call and see if anyone is open today. Anything you suggest?

Kanaplex, metroplex, and furan 2. Treat for 14 days per the instructions :)

Feeding it in QT won’t be fun, does it eat anything other than live pods?

Not that I've ever seen. We add pods to the tank every 5-6 weeks just to make sure his supply is good. Also, super worried I won't be able to catch him. He is less than 2cm and can fit in many of the holes in the rock. I've never gotten him out before. I guess we are about to try . Wish me luck.

Could I put a copepod jar in there with him? The rock in the jar would have to stay in QT forever after that, right?

You could try if you only used a small amount of rock rubble... but I’m not certain the pods will survive long-term with the meds there.

Best bet is probably going to be to try a baby brine type feeder, or maybe get some fish roe if you can find it locally (season is just about over, but local seafood market may have some)

The rock could be reused... you can disinfect it after, or just run some carbon and do a water change on the QT to remove any residual medication. It’s not like copper, where it will poison your tank.

Thank you so much for your insight and tips! We weren't able to catch him tonight, even after removing over half the rock in the tank. We are gonna try again in the morning, he usually hangs out a bit higher in the tank in the morning so I'm hoping we can sneak a net in there and grab him!!
