hi, I really want to get a pair of Green Mandarin Dragonets, but I know how picky they are with food. I have a 45 gallon tank with a decent amount of rock in it but here's my question, if I bought an mandarin feeder kit from AlgaeBarn, how long would it last me before I had to get a new one? It comes with over 5,280 copepods, A Large jar of live brine shrimp, and a can a preserved copepods. I would also let them reproduce in a container with chaeto algae for a week before adding them. Thanks

How long has the tank been established? Do you have a refugium where the pods can reproduce? These guys can eat A LOT of pods on a daily basis and I wouldnt depend on frozen foods. I would probably add a monthly supply of those pods to the tank if it was me.

Edit: I just saw that you wanted a pair, I would advise against this. One will be enough challenge let alone a pair.

I can not answer that question specificly. They eat a lot of pods. Keeping a pr in a 45 gallon long term will get expensive, unless you can get them eating prepared foods or can proudce the food yourself.

Ok then I would just get one. I think I would make a hang on back refugium so that they could breed and I would wait a couple of weeks before adding the fish. But it doesn't just come with copepods it comes with the brine shrimp too and the can of preserved cyclopods. So do you think that would last around 3-4 months?

if you get algaebarn mandarins they are Captive bred and wont live just on coepods but also frozen food. Now with that said I have a pair of wildcaught spotted mandarins in a 24 gallon nano but i feed them 7 times a day frozen food and dose pods twice a month at least
I have had thtem for 4 months but so far they both have potbellies so

Unfortunately, I dont think the HOB fuge will suffice. You'll have to add pods on a regular basis like once a month or make a PaulB's live brine shrimp feeder and hatch fresh brine shrimp everyday. These guys are one of my absolute favorite fish but demand a lot of their natural food. If its going to be an issue I would hold off.

This is awesome and whats necessary to keep them alive in a small tank. Kudos to you!
