My wife has been bugging me relentlessly for a Mandarin I keep telling her it won't live due to the lack of food. She has had her heart set on this fish for months even before I started the tank. I have a little 10g spare tank laying around could I turn this tank into hmm a 'Pod tank'? Make it strictly for pods to grow breed get a colony going and just syphon some out for food each night to go into my DT for a Mandarin since i'm working with a biocube I don't have a Refuge to grow them in so I was thinking this could be the next best way. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Yes you can! Breeding and cultivating pods at home is indeed possible. Also, mandarins from ORA are sold as eating frozen/prepared food, this is not guarantee and sometimes they regress back to live food, but just throwing it out there. Pods will also breed in your tank. How old is your tank right now? Do you have any pods? If your tank is young and no pods/very little pods, what you can do is pour in a bottle of pods (or buy them however you want) and give them time to breed, and give you time to make sure the tank is a-o-kay for a mandarin. It is best if the mandarin is the only mainly pod eating fish in the tank, so if you have a 6 line wrasse, this may not be possible unless you breed the pods outside of the tank.

I also found this just last night, I have no idea the credibility or quality though; : : : : Indo-Pacific Sea Farms : : : :
Pods will also breed in refugiums, they like the safe haven feel and all the wonderful macro algae to make as home and to eat. I hope this helps!

That's the only way you could have one in a tank with less than 50-70 lbs of live rock I was culturing phyto to feed the pods and pods to feed my mandarin in my ten gallon what is now a nem tank with a 6 gal sump and I couldn't keep the phyto going so I had to harvest the entire culture of pods a couple times. That being said I ended up selling the mandarin to my friend at the LFS because she wasn't fat anymore and I didn't want her to get even more skinny. Good luck and do all the research you can on phyto cultures and pod cultures their is plenty of info on phyto and a lil info on pods.

It may be easier and just as cost effective to purchase pods every month, I just got some for my mandarins from reef2go when they had them on sale.

I have also heard that ORA has been unable to keep up with the demand and won't be releasing any mandarins for a year.

Another thing to consider with ORA mannys is you need to be able to feed multiple times a day a mandarins life consists of grazing for pods that we usually can't see all day into dusk and before dawn and sleep well and procreation but food comes first. So that's the only thing I would worry about those guys is u would have to keep a rigorous feeding schedule.

I don't agree with the only way to have a mandarin is to have a second tank setup to culture pods. Before I got my mandarin I had a healthy breeding population of pods, when I bought mine I also bought a 500 pack of pods to add some diversity. Since getting the mandarin he has fattened up nicely and my pod population seems to have exploded. I check every night to see how my pods are doing and every time they are crawling on the glass, sand, rocks literally every where! Mandarins will constantly feed and I observe mine feeding every couple of seconds, so they do need lots of pods.

I do feel that the best way to keep a mandarin is to get it eating frozen, but it isn't a necessity. I would buy some packs of pods and stock your tank, give them a month or so to start breeding before you introduce the mandarin. As stated it is best to not have any other fish that will eat pods. If you don't have a sump then build up some rocks/shells in a corner to give the pods a place to hide and do their thing. Also having very porous rock gives them a place to hide and breed as well.

Just take your time and make sure you have a large pod population before introducing the mandarin. You can also look for a mandarin that is already eating frozen but as stated earlier there is no guarantee that when you get it, it will continue to eat frozen. You need to be prepared to stock pods if you see your population falling or if the mandarin won't eat frozen foods. Good luck and as always research, then research some more and GO SLOW!

Mine is fine and healthy in a 37 gal tank...omg with a squirel fish (aka black bar solider) too boot!...pods do their thing in my tank Au-natural. and I'm not about to build a tank just for pods....

I agree if you have a healthy breeding pop of pods than u will be successful I added a bag of pods a week for the first 6 months of my 10 gal and my GS manny is a Lil blimp she's only 1" long though she'll have to move to the 55 eventually.

You can get a hang-on refuge to grow pods. Very easy. I have kept mine alive for 3 years and still kicking.

1+ on the fuge to grow them. Will be better for your tank and also keep an abundant supply for your mandarin. My pods own the sump, but I also see them doing their thing at night all over the tank. Just added a few and their population exploded in a few months.

Yes sump/fuge is a huge factor (at least I think so anyway) in keeping a mandarin. It will help out a lot in being able to keep a mandarin through out it's natural life cycle.
