Have a manganese deficiency according to my latest Triton ICP analysis. They’re recommending 3.5ml/daily for 2 days, and then a .5ml/daily maintenance dose. The 100ml bottle of Triton Manganese is about $35. I’m looking for a bit more cost friendly solution, and what the comparable dosing would be. I’ve found the Fauna Marin Manganese, 250ml bottle, for about $25, just don’t know what the amount to dose would be based on their label. Any help?

thanks-

This is what I use. 200mL per bottle @ $21.99 per bottle.

  • 1 ml of AF Manganum increases manganese level by 0.001 mg/l in 100 litres (27 US gal) of water.
  • Recommended level: 0.001 – 0.0022 mg/l (ppm).
  • The maximum safe daily dose is 1 ml per 100 liters of water.

There are lots of DIY manganese threads. Here's one:

Thank you!

Any experience with ESV Transition Elements? I believe I may be able to correct my manganese level partially if I can increase my daily dose. The label says 1ml/20 gallons, but says nothing about a MAX dosage. I’m at 4ml/daily for a 85+/- total system. Would increasing this amount be bad overall or would an ICP be the best bet to determine that?

ICP is not a perfect answer.

Manganese depletes very rapidly. Only a few grams of macroalgae or microalgae growth can strip the tank. That said, I don't think we have a good idea how much is needed, or if it is even necessary to be detectable by ICP. In my tank and many others it was not. Does that mean the tank would benefit from dosing? Only experimentation can determine that.

ICP will be hard to get a dose except by multiple tests over time.

I'd suggest experimenting and see what benefits the tank (or not).

i expect the ESV product is a fine supplement, but I've not seen any info from folks dosing it at higher than recommended elve3ls.

This is my favorite thread for DIY manganese dosing:

Here's the calculation for the second one that Miami recommended (from another thread):

Let's suppose your target is 165 ng/L, which is a typical ocean value (it varies a lot). Triton uses a set point 10x higher.

100 gallons is 379 liters.

So a NSW value of 165 ng/L x 379 L = 62,535 ng (0.063 mg) in your tank.

From the stock recipe above:

Manganese(II) chloride tetrahydrate is 28% manganese by weight.
Here's a recipe:

Dissolve 1 gram (which contains 280 mg actual manganese) in 2.8 L fresh water. Manganese = 280 mg/2.8 L = 100 mg/l.

Thus you want 0.063 mg/100 mg/L = 0.00063 L or 0.6 mL added to the 100 gallon tank to match typical NSW levels.

IF you used manganese gluconate (about 12.4% manganese by weight) you would need to use about twice as much.
