I love the idea of having a mangrove in my tank. They are so beautiful. I have questions. What are the benefits and are there any problems with having them? Where do you purchase them? Do you need a deep sand bed? My tank is only 5 gallons. Is that a problem? I have a Reef Breeders LED fixture that is probably overkill for my tank but my corals are loving it. Are there any special lighting requirements?

Do you think it will be OK in a 5 gallon tank? Also, my sand bed is about an inch. Is that good?

how deep is it would be my Q....mangroves need their tops in the air.

If it's deeper then the shoots going to need to grow the roots out some. Which isnt a problem. I've got one growing in a 65 gal atm. Just kinda rigged it so it's bottoms in the water tops in the air.
Seen folks do this with cutting pool noodles to float them.

They don't require too much lighting.
Make sure to keep magnesium levels around 1100-1200
Misting the tops with fresh water in a spray bottle is a good idea. If this is an electrocution issue you can wipe them with a wet cloth. Red mangroves are salt excluders instead of excreters, so if you go with them it won't be as critical as it is with black mangroves. But they do tend to collect salt spray and it can dry them out.

I keep mine in the sump no sand i zip tie them to the egg crate with just the roots under water and i spay it with ro water every other day

I grow mine in a bare bottom tank, so no, you don't need a dsb. It helps stabilizing the plan to have it growing in sand.

Old post, but curious. How do you set it up in BB? Where do the roots go? Looking to grow one in my sump or my BB frag tank.

Hey. I had the mangrove growing the roots in LR that part was working fine. The mangrove died though... I'm guessing it was due to very low nutrients, so thats something to consider if trying it out.
