Also, how long have they been in the water? I have mine in the sand, fully submerged, and roots began to appear after about 2 weeks. I know because I had to transplant a couple. Was surprised to see roots so quickly to be honest. The tops had the little green spikes (beginning of the leaves I assume) but have barely grown, again at least underwater. The roots have come out much quicker than any growth on the tops.

I was trying to figure out the same thing a while back! I rinsed them in tap water and wiped the white stuff off. After like a week or two, one of the five has two little roots! The tops of mine were more of a brown than green when I got them so I thought they were just dead.

Sorry to hijack but, are mangroves safe to grow in a display? I've got about an inch or so of sandbed. Will the roots destroy live rock or the silicone seems?
