My LFS had a few mangroves for sale which got me thinking about purchasing one. I only left with my water this time, but I was wondering if anyone had experience with them and how it was for them.

I've been reading that they need brackish water and not salt water, but then I've also seen some in a refugium.

I got 5 for $10 on eBay a few years ago. Get the very young ones with no leaves or roots and let them grow for you. Within 3 months in a nano reef all of them had 3 leaves, 1 had 4, and extensive roots. If you get them a little older with leaves, I am told they will usually drop the leaves and many not survive - but I have no direct experience with those.

Get pods, not ones with leaves. Those need to be acclimated very slowly and often die. Mangroves can do well in a refugium but you need proper lighting and you need to spray off the leaves with freshwater dialy/every other day. They have to be supported mostly above water. Also, if you want them just because, go for it. If you want them for nutrient removal, they are not efficient as the main component of a refugium and chaeto is much better at nutrient export and much easier to keep.

I have 10 ish mangroves in one of my frag tanks. If you get the pod you can grow it in any water from salt to fresh but after they're growing it's very difficult to acclimate them from fresh to salt water. I wouldn't really consider them to have any negatives? Don't let the dead leaves rot in the water I guess. I also don't think they provide much of a benefit other then the fun of growing a tree
