What do you guys think about having a mangrove tree in a sps dominated reef tank with full root system on tree?

Is any mangrove safe for a tank?
I've been thinking about adding some for quite a while but don't wana pay a fortune for them. I can (assuming it legal and safe for the plant) dig some up in the lake near me. I'm not sure if any type is safe though.

I believe any is safe but I also think it is illegal to just go out and get some? Just be careful if so! Ha

Thanks :)
They're pretty abundant in my part of the world, so I don't think anyone will notice if a few little ones go walkabouts lol.

If I remember right you can collect the propagules that wash up on the beach or that drop from the trees but can't dig them up, don't quote me on that though. I have 6 in my overflow of my new tank and have had them in several of my other tanks, I will be setting up a mangrove specific tank in the next few weeks. I think there are red and black mangroves, both of which are fine for any tank and will help with nutrient export, just spray the leaves with fresh water daily and that's it. There is a user on Ebay named BambooDynasty that has good prices and is a great seller from florida.

I've heard that too. That's an American law though, I'm in Australia, so it may be different. The aquarium trade isn't huge here in aus so there's not a lot for sale compared to the US, so I'd have to collect some.
Thanks for the freshwater tip :)
I heard you can't let the leaves fall back into the tank water because that's where they hold all the phosphate and nitrate they remove from the water. Is there any truth in that?

I didn't even notice you being in Australia, sorry. The laws are probably different there. As far as the leaves, I have heard that also but I think as long as they are not allowed to rot in the water you will be fine. Mine have never dropped leaves but it may be an issue with much larger mangroves.

I don't yet but I've decided to go ahead and do a mangrove system in my reef tank build should have pics in the next couple of weeks! Can't wait to see how it turns out

I honestly think that's extremely rare only if you have a big tree over a long time, could be wrong tho

Here is a pic that was posted in one of the threads on here a couple of days ago.

I would have to say that the only way it would push through the bottom is if there was no other room.

+1.
I'm just speculating, but I would think MAYBE in a small tank, but when you start getting into the thicker glass of larger tanks it wouldn't be an issue.
