Hi all,

I was considering trying a mangrove in my DT. My tank is 24" deep. If the mangrove propagule is only 6-8" long it will be completely submerged upon placing in the sandbed. Is that okay?

Thanks.

I have like 20 mangroves lol and I need to put up a sand bed for them ASAP. I don’t think you’re supposed to let them set out or completely submerged. I would rig some kinda shelf for it to sit on or something but I’m not sure what the pro mangrove keepers think.

Bump

You can't keep mangroves submerged, their growing tip needs to be out of the water.

You could grow them out in a pot or smaller aquarium, or you can buy taller mangroves online that have already been grown out some. What's the actual depth from the water line to the top of the substrate?

I’ve had this exact same question. Where could we buy them already grown out?

There are a few sellers on ebay that sell different size trees. Sometimes they are optimistic with their measurements I've found, so if you need a certain minimum height, I'd recommend going for taller. I'm personally not sure how well they do being transplanted however. Some people have success with this I think, though long-term success is often not well documented. Be sure to get ones that have been grown in saltwater that matches the salinity you're going to add them to, they don't acclimate well to going from FW to SW, and even then if I you're going to do it you have to do it very slowly.
