mangroves

Just was wondering on everybody's opinion on mangroves I am new to reefs2reefs and any opinion welcomed

I killed pods, and did everything by the book. From website readings they weren't the best or highest on the scale of beneficial. That said I would give a bunch of cash to have a successful mangrove fuge....

I wil be following to hear success stories....

I have a bunch of mangroves in my sump and a few behind the rocks in my display tank. They are great for eating up nitrates and such. Only thing is that you have to mist them with freshwater at least once a day. It's best to order a bunch on eBay. The LFS was selling them for 8-10 bucks a piece, I got 15 for $19.95 plus free shipping off of eBay!! They work great as an addition to a fuge and they are interesting to watch grow.

I had a bunch around 7-8 growing in my fuge. They were doing good although very slow growing under a 65w power compact. You do have to mist them although I didn't everyday. After reading the benefit was not worth the work.they do look nice however.

I just went diving in them in Florida

Haha same here! Marathon! Watch out for the cuda's:) Mangroves grow well if you give them the specific care they need. Lots of info out there on them.
Welcome aboard and good luck!

They don't grow fast enough to be an efficient means of nutrient export and they use mag from your water. You would be much better off with chaeto and some other fast growing macros, red Titan grows like a weed for me. I have a few growing but it's purely for ascetics.

Moved to current forum.

I love the look of mangroves and I am considering adding them to my fuge.

Very slow growers therfore they are not good for nutrient export, if you add them they won't replace caulerpa/chaeto.....but they look pretty cool!

I have 6 mangroves in my refugium the thing is u need a lot to do anything and it takes a couple months for them to even start to clean your water but saying that I know a man who has alot and he doesnt even run a protein skinner anymore
I had grape caulerpara but didnt trust it atleast with mangroves u know it wont go a sexual and if it did that would be a good thing lol and it wont crash on you like caulerpara the best woukd be cheato or mangroves although other macro is be5ter than mangroves there is alot of dif ways other macro could crash or even take over your display tank
