Currently setting up a 10 gal tank for a smasher mantis. I'll pics on the rockwork down below (which will be readjusted by the mantis anway). Any pointers on keeping these guys? I'm decently educated on their needs but I don't know many varieties that stay under 5" but still have a great personality like a peacock. All tips welcome! Tank is currently dry.. I will be doing a w/c on my 30 gal and am going to use that water to start the tank, along with transferring some bacteria filled ceramic rings from my 30 gal

lights are off in this pic (nearly all blue so it has a much better vibe)

the little ******* is trying to sleep so it was hard to get that pic of him... it's a more bland color overall but he has some nice orange near his tail... and of course has a stellar personality

What mantis did you end up getting?

I hate saying this but I don't know... I work part time at my LFS and we've had this guy for a few weeks... I put him on hold and picked em up today. He was marked plainly as 'Mantis shrimp' when we got him in.. $25 I'll post some better pictures of him tommorrow once he's out and about

I love mantis shrimp! But I would b careful of any aquascape not glued down they will burrow under and knock them down. And I would suggest a sand bed at least a few inches deeper than the length the mantis will grow. They really like to dig!

If I see a smaller peacock come through I may switch out unless I become attached to this guy

10 gal is going to be too small for a O. scyllarus. See if you can get some pics and we can try to help ID the one you have.

ID possibly?

The meral spots would help the ID. You don't need pics but if you can get a look and see what color they are the ID would be a lot easier.

Any idea where it came from? Maybe the location of the shipment it came from could help too.

+1 on the aquascape issue; we thought ours was OK, but a rock fell and crushed our little guy. Sad times!

I'm not too concerned about it... everything is pretty stable + the mantis isn't as mean as most... I ticked him off a bit when getting those pictures and he didn't throw hands at all

He's hiding at the moment... we can kinda see his meral spots in the picture of him eating... give any clues as to what he may be?

The metal spots are located on the inside of the arms right against the krill In that pic.
