If you can find a small spearing species and give it a deep sand bed to create its burrow, then maybe, as they don't move much from their home. Problem is, outside of the larger species like the peacock and zebra, not many places actively sell or collect and sell mantids. There is KP Aquatics that sells 3 species of small smashers; they get about 3 inch max so most people recommend a 5-10 gal for them:

Gonodactylus childi is a very small smasher that sometimes is collected on purpose, gets about 2 inches:
