Its not and fish appears undernourished. If eating, offer foods such as LRS fish frenzy, plankton, chopped clam and krill,pieces of shrimp and mysis shrimp.I just purchased this Mappa Puffer from my LFS and have him in quarantine! He is about 6” long. Is this normal for his face to not be puffed out! It looks like his cheeks are sucked in! He is not interested in clams on the half shell or other larger foods! He well nip at frozen brine shrimp that I feed to the other fish in quarantine but overall hasn’t really eaten anything yet and I have seen him bite at some live rock that is in the tank! I got him on Wednesday!
Thanks for the info - The only thing that he is eating is frozen cube fish food (nips at it) and some raw shrimp cut up but only in little bites and it is just a small amount. After two small pieces, he stops. Besides being undernourished, could him not eating be due to being in a new tank? Usually puffers will go after food even if in a new tank. This may be why he looks undernourished. I have seen him try to takes chunks out of a piece of live rock that is in the tank. Thanks
Can be new tank, acclimation, flukes and even intimidation from tankmates. Are you treating the tank with anything and at what level of treatment (eg: Coppersafe- what level).
Not treating the tank at this time. This fish was dipped at the LFS and he is not having any breathing issues what so ever. Other habitants in the tank are shying away from him due to his size. No aggression by any of the fish in the Q tank. Thanks
Quarantine recommended with this type of fish as with many others.
