I am thinking about trying some maricultured sps. I wanted to know everyone's thoughts on if it's a good idea or not?

Has anyone had good success with them? Are they Hardy corals? Who did you get them from?

Thanks

Maricultured corals are basically the same thing as wild corals. They are grow out from frags at a farm somewhere around the Indo Pacific. As such, they are the same hit and miss with any wild corals you might purchase. The biggest difference between what we purchase from other reefers or vendors are frags from corals that are "Tank Hardened" meaning they probably started life in a closed reef aquarium and have recovered from fragging in the same type of system. You need to do your homework with any coral you purchase but fragged corals are more tolerant of our systems;)

If you do decide to go with maricultured corals, upon getting them home, cut the plug/base material away from the coral itself. These are made with who knows what and seem to create issues - I have had them on bricks, fiberglass, epoxy resins, and other stuff that is fine in the oceans, the leaching washes away from the corals, but in our systems it doesn't go away...I have a feeling also causes major tank problems...we just cannot attribute it to it...
