They do color up. It’s just a roll of the dice if they will make the transition.
I always look to see if the skin is completely healed all around the piece. If there is Skelton showing I past. To much a chance for infection.
I find them much more sensitive to any kind of instability and color can be kind of a crap shoot as they frequently come in fairly brown. I've gotten some nice pieces this way, but also gotten a few with pretty dull coloration. Another thing to note with the wild and maricultured colonies is that they come from higher nutrient level environments than most low nutrient sps systems, so sometimes they have trouble adapting to that.
Also, make sure you take the coral off the base. You'll lose a bit of the encrusting, but you also won't get all this algae... (This is a maricultured plug I left in the fuge to see what it's seeded with)
They can do fine. They are a bit more sensitive than frags, but if you have a mature system with lots of flow and lights, they can do pretty well. The will get colorful.
As mini-colonies, they need more light (spread) and flow than frags. They are harder in this regard, but so are colonies grown in captivity.
It all depends on the coral and conditions. Keep water near nsw levels and nutrients on the low sidea and flow high. Wild and maricultured sps do best under mh as well. I did not have much luck with wild sps some would die quickly and a few lasted several months, grew then died for no apparent reason. I had better luck with maricultured sps most kept color and did well lost a few though. QT or at least dip them well.
