I run a 90 gallon reef tank with 60-80 lbs of live rock, 100lbs of sand, and 1 marine pure plate in my sump. Total water volume is about 100 gallons with the sump. Recently I have noticed my leather corals and candy canes aren’t doing to hot. I read some forums on here that the marine pure could be leaching aluminum. I don’t know if this is the case or not as i have not done a Triton test yet. That being said, is it better to be safe than sorry and just remove the plate? Will losing the plate effect my bio filter or do I have enough sand and rock for a sufficient filter for my bio load? My tank is 9 months old and is stocked with 2 OC clowns, 3 blue green chromis, 1 Magnificent foxface, 1 long nose hawk, 1 Melanrus wrasse, 1 diamond watchman Goby, 1 Yasha goby, and 2 PJ cardinals. I have a small yellow tang, 3 Banngai Cardinals, and a flame angel in quarantine. Once these fish are added I do not plan on adding anything else. I am also struggling with 0 nitrates. I have read marine pure helps keep nitrates down. My goal is mainly improve the health of my leather but a nice secondary benefit would be to raise my nitrates a little. Current parameters salinity 1.024, calcium 410, alk 9, ph 7.9-8.1 temp 78 phosphates .08 nitrates 0.

Yes it leaches aluminum. And yes softies are effected by aluminum.

Removing it wont hurt your biofiltering. The live rock and sand has plenty of surface area for bacteria to grow.

Cory, are you sure it has been shown to be a fact that Marinepure leaches Al in quantities significant enough to be a detriment ?

Hum I have the marine pur blocks my leathers are looking good still been in the tank about a year now, Been planning on moving a few of the blocks to my new build to seed the tank. I have not run a Triton test on this tank but will on my new one.

Then I wouldn't worry abut it, at least in the old tank. :)
