Has anyone ever thought of or has done the following, taking a bio block and hollowing it out then filling the cavity with miracle mud. Does this sound like a good idea?

It’s kind of a redundant thing. The miracle mud is a substrate, mostly designed to be be used with a rooting calurpa in the ecosystem method. It also provides a place for bacteria.
The block are just a place for bacteria. The blocks Will have vastly more surface area for bacteria than the miracle mud.

Trace elements provided by the man made mud are highly debated , for decades in fact

Are you referring to substrates? I am considering fuji mud in my sump along with chaeto

Miracle mud is a substrait used in the ecosystem method. Basically a deep sand bed. But man made.

Fiji mud is scooped from the ocean and is in fact mud.
And you probably considering it is my fault. I’m that guy. I went viral. Lol.

The way I use fiji mud is like a deep sand bed. I mix it with live sand to get the benifit of the increased surface area , And the Bacteria , bugs , corraline , etc. my concern with using only Fiji mud is that becomes compacted. That could be bad imo. Nitrate factory and sulphide from going bad. Plus it’s a big addition to the nutrients in the tank. Some like me don’t care but..

If you go that rout , I’d suggest the small can , yes even for 300 gal(unless it’s my dream fuge ), and various sand sizes. Or just one size if it’s a small tank or fuge.
The Fiji mud is just seed.

My thought is that rather than having a solid plastic or glass container for the mud where water would only flow over the top of the container the hollowed out porous bio block would be better for the water to flow through the mud and still stay contained.

try a filter sock and let marine pur do its thing...It's your money..try it, You might start a trend:cool:

If the water flows “through” the mud like you want, will it ever settle out? When I put mud in my tank, it was cloudy for a day because it wouldn’t settle to the bottom.
