Marine Pure Bricks

Following.. going light on rock in my current build so considering biospheres or blocks, using bio balls now but looking for more surface are in a minimum space.

I switched to Brightwell's dimpled NO3xport brick and won't go back to Marine Pure. It has stood up well and did actually lower nitrate.

I cant speak to the effectiveness of the marine pure but Seachems matrix worked very poorly for me. I put a gallon of it into my sump and all it did was become a massive collection point for detritus which led to massive algae outbreaks. Removing it from my sump was the best thing I ever did for my reef.

following... I was planing to use marine pure 8x8x1 in my new and (first build)

i have the marinepure 1 inch cubes (around 20 of them), not the plates not the spheres but the smaller cubes. I have had these in my system for about 10 months now, beginning of cycle onward. Now I have a very light bioload in a 93 cube (4 fish) but I have been running undetectable nitrates for the past 3 months and its been difficult to even get them to show any color in my tests. I attribute this to the total filtration I have not to just one piece of filtration. Its a combination of the filter socks, the skimmer, and the marine pure in my mind. I wouldnt look to one cure all for denitrification but filtration on the mechanical biological and chemical level. I think they have been a very beneficial part of my filtration and will use in all future builds I have. If you're looking to the blocks for pure denitrification then the bigger the block the better. In any low flow section, the interior of the brick will be where the denitrification will happen and there is more "interior" on a thicker brick.

My 2 marinepure blocks haven't crumbled and I've had them in my system 19 months

I've had 2 - 8x8x1" blocks in my previous system for 4+ years without a problem. Makes one wonder if a faulty batch entered supply chain at some point or perhaps the formula has changed.

Currently I have 2 - 8x8x1" blocks in my holding system for well over a year without any issues and 4 - 8x8x4 on standby for the new build; hope no issues there once put to use.

I would seriously consider Seachem's Pond Matrix. I put the 20 l pail in my sump, its on month 6 and I could not be happier with its performance and absolutely Zero break down. From the looks of it, it easily could be as is for 5+ years before any break down.
