I heard a rumor that Marine Pure leeches aluminum. I need surface area for my tank so I want to know. Is that true? And if it is, is it harmful to coral? Thanks!

Yes it can and does leach it. Yes to some corals it’s harmful.

IMO, the answer is yes, but the risk is low.

That said, what is the situation that you know you want more surface area? Few reef tanks really appear to need more surface area, and it is not very effective at denitrification.

It also looks to me like it's primarily from ceramic dust from when you first add it to the tank, so rinsing thoroughly first probably helps. My early ICP test results showed elevated aluminum, but recent ones do not.

My aquascape is very small so my surface area is very small. I have about 100lbs of live rock and my tank is 180 gallons.

I would not be sure you need anything, but it may be beneficial. We have almost no data on what is really needed in a reef tank to keep ammonia adequately low.
