Marine X Filter Sock Chamber Noise HELP

New to the hobby! I'm setting up my waterbox marine x 90.3, i've got it flowing the way I feel it should be and the tank is silent as can be but not sure my sump had the proper height water. It was set to 11 inches high which was exactly the same height as my sock chamber. My problem though is introducing my skimmer Nyos Quantum 120 which say the sump area should be 8 inches high. I removed water to get it down to 8 inches which leaves a 2 inch sock chamber drop. This made my sock chamber noise go up considerable and no mater the flow adjustments I make can't seem to get it silent or close to. Can hear it completely outside the cabinet in my living room.

Any thoughts here to get my take silent again but not screw anything up? I don't wanna start my tank cycle until I got everything dialed in properly. I could put something under the skimmer (not sure what) so it's not so deep in the sump but not sure if that would be okay.

Easy fix! Get a bio block and cut it down to 3 inches of height and out your skimmer on top of that, this serves two purposes, creates a high surface area home for bacteria to live (bio block) and raises your skimmer the needed height so it will still be at 8 inches of depth (sitting on top of the bio block.) you can also buy a skimmer stand which is like a little platform the skimmer can sit on that will raise it, but my preferred method is to use a bio block, I have a waterbox 100.3 and use a nyos skimmer as well.

I didn’t cut the bio block down, I just used it as is and put the skimmer on top of it, once i got it dialed in I’ve had no issues, hope this helps, happy reefing!

Have the marine x 110.5 and I have the nyos 160 i have my water level way lower than your picture If that’s the height you want then I would add the blocks like others suggested

11" water level in the skimmer section seems really high. I wonder if somehow they cut the glass wrong going into the pump section. It seems like the majority of skimmers now only require between 7" - 8" of water.

Well the 11" isn't some recommendation, only way to keep sound down from the sock chamber is to keep it to where the water is just below the sock inlet. Other than that you hear alot of dripping noises outside the cabinet (pretty noisy). I went ahead and temporarily put a glass pot under it to get the skimmer to 8" and seems to be good outside trying to dial it in which is a pain in the butt. Ordered a skimmer stand for something permanent. Was just curious if I was being crazy on this or would run into issues with this much water in my sump.

As long as the water doesn’t overflow your sump when you turn the return pump off you’re good!

I run a felt sock only in the front chamber. It also depends on how much water you have running through the sump.

How close to the top of the sump does the water get when you turn off your return pump? That level
looks dangerously high.

It has about 1 1/2 inches if the pump is off till it would overflow into the sock chamber but at least 2 1/2 till full overflow.

Just to update this thread, I ended up leaving the water at 11 inches which is even with the sock chamber. No noise and got a skimmer stand to make it 8inches high. All is well!

was able to go as low as 3” without using the adjustable stand piece. It works great with this nyos 120
