Can someone advise and tell me if this is a good system for my 55g Reef aquarium? I have mostly softies and one or two hard corals right now.

better off getting a ReefBreeders Value LED fixture. the marineland will work for your softies but you will eventually find yourself wanting more light when you start getting more into LPS and SPSs. The ReefBreeders Value LED are are capable of growing softies, lps, and sps.

I dont know how those lights get away with saying "reef capable" honestly. Dont waste your money on them, there are quite a few options for LED now that wont kill your wallet. Reefbreeders are def one of them, along with buildmyled.

Dont do it!!! Like they said look up the sponsors here, you can get some leds that will actually grow corals for a decent price. You can almost guarantee that you will be buying more lights as an upgrade if you buy these marinelands first.
How much do the marinelands cost?

Yea, marineland had good intentions with this light but honestly its not going to do too much for you. It will do alright with softies but at some point you will want for more and that light will leave you at a major disadvantage! You can get plenty of moderately priced led units from prefabricated to diy that will blow the doors off that marineland, or go with the tried and true t5 or mh.

If your looking for a good light for the cost I just did a PAR test on a Maxspec Razor. These readings were on a 60gal cube. Also just to give you a reference I also measured a friends MH 20K bulbs and got close to the same reading. Now the Maxspect R420R readings were 670 on the top 6 to 10 inches, below that 400 from 10 to 20 and 300 to the sand bed. Very good results when you compare them to the MH which was 600 at the top down to around 8 inches, 550 in the middle section of the tank and 420 at the sand bed.

I think the guy paid $500.oo for the Maxspec which for the readings I got is a great price. Then you should look at longevity of the light and I'm not sure I can help you but it looks really good.

Hope this helps.

All readings taken with an Apogee MQ200

how deep was the sand bed you were measuring? i have a 72x18x29high sanded, minus the 4 inch deep sanded, we are talking 25 inches of water from the top of the tank. that's not including the 6-8inches the legs lift it off the top of the tank. I want so badly to get the r420r, but can't find anybody with real experience and measurements. I can't even find anybody to tell me how many watts per led is this thing putting out. get that for some real weird news. it is something almost every manufacturer of leds will post on their advertisemt but seem to be a national secret with this company. I even called and they can't or won't tell me. what gives. again i want so much for this to work and i would buy 3 of them. ive got a totally dry tank sitting in my living room. .
