I swapped out about 4 Qrts of the generic blue plastic bio balls for 2 Qrts of the MarinePure Spheres in my wet/dry for my 55 Gal. I also placed one of the 8x8x1 plates to replace an old sponge I had just sitting at the bottom of the wet/dry (Warning: The plates are almost impossible to ship with out breaking). Both the spheres and plate do it's job as far as maintaining my water parameters, I do have to say they absorb/hold an impressive amount of water.
My suggestion would be to continue to do your research I've read conflicting opinions regarding how the spheres are used. If they are not submerged and water only passes through them its used as "nitrification" filtration and if they are submerged and sit submerged under the waterline at all times its becomes "denitrifying". Both serve it's corresponding purpose of removing ammonias, nitrites and lowering nitrates. I opted for both options as half of the spheres remain above the water line and the plate always stays submerged.
