I've read it can cause issues, is this true or not? And would a marinepure block be better or worse than some pond matrix

There have been reports of it leaching Aluminum. With that said I have 3 of the large Marine Pure bricks and 2 of the Brightwell NO3 Bricks in my sump and have seen zero issues.
I have no experience with the pond matrix so I no advise on it.

Check the MSDS from marine pure, brightwell, and matrix. They’re all made from amorphous aluminum silicate. Aka pumice stone. Issues? There’s enough evidence out there showing that elevated aluminum levels appear to be fairly benign

I’m not sure this is accurate. Elevated means a lot of things. Randy has looked into this showing that at certain point his corals were not so happy with “elevated” aluminum.

I’m familiar with the article. I’ve also seen enough evidence in person to the contrary in tanks testing at 50x they recommend limit of aluminum. While is is an authority figure in the hobby, one cannot ignore contradicting evidence.

I
Don’t think there’s a recommended or safe limit but based on the knowledge we have it acts as a toxin to corals.

Not a safe limit for all I suppose. Every species will naturally have a different threshold, I’m sure based on other environmental cues that threshold could change by the same species as well. Just saying I’ve seen plenty of tanks with dramatic growth, color, and general health, with extremely elevated Al levels, presumably from marine pure use, as compared to surface water in Fiji
