I have a 10 month old 20g AIO mixed reef with LPS and Softies. In one of my back chambers, I have a mesh bag with MarinePure Ceramic bio balls. It looks fairly dirty, so I was thinking of taking out the bag temporarily to clean it in a bucket of saltwater and also cleaning the chamber. As long as I keep the bio balls in saltwater, that shouldn’t upset the bacterial balance of my tank right? I’m guessing cleaning the bio balls in freshwater would kill the bacteria and potentially cause an imbalance.

Yes that’s correct I would though clean half one week and half the other

And if you really want add some bottle bacteria both times or the 1

Good suggestion, thank you.
Yeah np I have a jellyfish tank that uses a sponge for the filtration and that’s what I do. Lol one of my biggest mistakes was buying live sand and putting straight to on it. I’m actually cycling a bio cube right now I’m a bucket with air pump, bottle bac and pure ammonia.

I think you and your bacteria should be fine. I had a similar issue but quickly realized the "dirt" was actually dust from the MarinePure spheres disintegrating. Just make sure they're in good shape.

Thank you for the reply. I’ll be curious to see what shape they’re in.

I've cleaned my Marine Pure blocks and balls many times in saltwater without issues. I just swish the balls or blocks vigorously in a bucket of freshly made saltwater about every 8 to 10 months when I do a regular water change. I've never had a crash doing this in any of my 5 tanks and I have Marine Pure in all of them, but I'm careful not to lift the ball or blocks out of the water for more than mire seconds when dipping and dripping to rinse. The balls and blocks never completely drain before I put them back in the water. I've never added any extra instant bacteria to the media when putting them back in the tanks, but I'm sure it couldn't hurt. :)

Thank you for the reply. That was my plan exactly.
