I have a pair of maroon clownfish that have been dusting/fanning one particular area everyday for the past week. They flap their tails and have cleared out the sandbed all the way to he bottom glass.

They get along well and do not fight or show aggression towards one another. Does anyone know what this behavior means?

They're either tending their eggs, or preparing for them.

After they're laid, the male will tend them with a level of OCD you've never seen before. They'll be little dots, about .5mm-1mm in diameter.

They are planning a family. Get use to it. Maroons are notorious for this.

Yep, usually aggressive cleaning of their area means eggs will be coming fairly soon, watch for the larger /females belly begin to swell

Do Maroons happen to spawn more than other breeds?

I think you are maybe replying to the comment someone said maroons are notorious for this?
I can't say any breed spawns more or less than others, perhaps that person meant they fan sand, and that may be true, maybe, I do recall my last couple maroon pairs fanned sand quite a bit.

As for spawning, once they begin all clowns spawn about every 2 weeks.

I've done a lot of research...as in hoping to start breeding my Lightning maroons....isn't it 2.5" when the female can finally spawn?

Probably about right size/age wise, I think the best info on breeding clowns would be Joyce Wilkerson's book "clownfishes"

Mine does the same thing and yes they are ready to lay a batch. Get used to it. I want to sell mine just for that reason

LOL!! Yup, a Maroon can move 30lbs of sand in a day. And the female will decide to move and clean another area when the mood strikes her. On the bright side, you never have to worry about your sand bed getting dirty. Maroons can also pick up rocks that are 2-3lbs and carry them down the tank and toss them. They are a most enjoyable if frustrating clown.
