Maroon Clownfish Behavior

Alot of maroons do that kicking up sand thing. I don't know if it really been determined why though. Some people think it's a territory marking behavior, some say it's a place to sleep. Either way, your clown isn't crazy.

I thought it was weird when I saw her doing that. I have had this pair of maroons for about 3 years now and have never seen her do that before. I sat there and watched her do that for about 20 minutes before I broke out the cell phone to record that. I wasnt sure if it was a territorty thing or what. Thanks for the info.

My bicinctus do this behavior frequently, usually for three noticeable purposes:
1) to kick up infauna prey into the water column, which the fish then consumes
2) to clear all sand and moveable structure away from their spawning location
3) to protect their territory from scavengers (such as hermit crabs) that will prey on the nest - even if they are between spawns
In your case, it seems to be an aggressive action towards the crabs...

I have a mated pair of goldbar maroon clownfish which were rather terrortorial in our community tank so we moved them into a tank of thier own. The larger one (which I assume is the female from what I have read) has always done that thing where it moves its tailfin real fast and digs a hole in the sand. In the new tank we set up some rock and sand for them and tonight they completely knocked all the rock down....luckly it is a plexiglass tank and it didn't break. I caught the big maroon in action...it grabbed the rock with its mouth and pushed with all its might with its tail! Is it trying to destroy my tank? I have known it to move small rocks and shells with its mouth but it is moving huge rocks...some 5 times as large as this? Could the fish be stressed since we moved it to a much smaller tank? When they were in the big tank they only stayed on one side of the tank and guarded "their"rock..Not too sure what to do...if they are going to tear up my tank they are going to find a new home soon.....
