Maroon clownfish

Just wanted to make this thread to share an experience and want to know people’s thoughts. I’ve had a maroon clownfish for about a year now and it is hands down my favorite fish. I heard they get super big and are super aggressive and mine was neither has anyone had similar experiences or is mine 1 in a million? Genuinely just curious

I have one and she is big (as far as clownfish go), beautiful fish and quite aggressive. She has a tank to herself as she chases everyone else out.

my pair took sorta over half of a 150 and they can get huge ..
Beautiful fish, worth it but folks should know the caveats and limitations of the species…IME they are slightly outside normal clown husbandry ….emphasis on slightly

Had a pair in the 90s. Never bothered another soul. However, weren’t purchased as a pair. Male was introduced later. Never paired up but all continued to be civil. After several months. Female killed that male yet never bothered any others. Tank was 29g and had several other damsels. Recall about six. Two blue devils, two yellowtails and two dominos. All were at or near maturity. Tank was crowded. Few rocks. Yet all got along. Plus a snowflake and large scarlet hermit crab.

Go figure. Internet tells me they should have been more like gangsters at an old school wrestling battle royal

Interesting mine may be a male still Ive had it since it was under an inch. That may be why it’s so nice.

Thank you for the reply that’s always what Ive heard iv had mine over a year and it’s barely grown. Do males stay smaller?

I have never kept one that didn't end up being a problem unfortunately.

Males can stay small, even for 10 years + IME, while the female grows. I've had breeding pairs (GSM) where the male hardly grows at all while the female continues to get bigger. They have a tendancy to fan the bottom throwing sand/gravel all over the place like a giant cloud. They are one of the more aggressive clowns with females taking on Emperor angels much bigger than them. But they are one of my favorite clownfish.

The males staying smaller is due to the female not letting it eat as much. If you only have one, chances are it's a female already. What size tank and how much is being fed? Those factors are much more important when size is being considered.

I've had one for 20 years. She's every bit of 5 inches long, and the second biggest clown I've ever seen. She has the best personality. I've gone by the rule of never putting in a fish bigger than her into the tank. She's always been friendly to other tank mates. About 3 years ago, I put in a tiny Gold Nugget. I was worried she would eat him because he was about 1/2 an inch long, but they immediately became a pair. He would sleep under her fins and climb up on her back like a horse. They spawned a couple times about 6 months later. We call him her lil' ***** because she herds him back into his place while she swims all over the tank. He's finally gotten his gold color, but he's less than 2 inches long.

She is only aggressive to the food that I put in the tank and the tank scrapper when it's in her area. She did nip me a couple times early on when I would clean the tank, but then I realized she didn't like me putting sand back into her area. When I stopped, we never had another problem. She also rips tentacles off my Ritteri when he decides to go on an adventure and move around the tank. I never could get her to be hosted by my Ritteri or any LPS, but she seems happy sleeping on the floor.

She's the pet I've had the longest, and every upgrade to my tank is for her happiness.

That is actually so cool my maroon has become my favorite fish as well.

I’ve only had one for a year it was in a 40 gallon but just recently switched to a 20 gallon that I found a really good deal on.

20g is probably going to be too small in the long run if you want to have more than 1 fish. 1 year isn't much time and these fish are known for being very territorial.

I have had mine for over six years. She is definitely the queen of the tank but with that “off with your head” sort of mentality, lol tries to bite us every time we need to work the tank has taken out a few smaller fish on her own, nasty as all get out, but I still love her.
