I had a friend give me a maroon clown today. He was getting bullied real bad and his fins are pretty torn up. He's now the first and only fish in our 75 gallon. Will his fins grow back? About how long will it take?

Do you plan to keep the fish? They can get aggressive towards new tank mates depending on the fish you want.

Looks like it’ll grow back. Looks like aggression. Give it 3-6 months most if not all should grow back. :)

It probably shouldn’t even take that long. My flame wrasse is low man in the tank and is always missing a chunk of something. Usually heals completely in a couple of weeks.

Do you think there's any concern it could become infected?

It’s possible, but since it’s already in the tank I’d say feed well and keep an eye out for signs of fin rot.

If it starts to look white-ish and like the tissue is receding away from the fin spines, then you’d want t move the fish to QT immediately.

Usually fins grow back pretty well on their own though.

My maroon clown took a few months to heal years ago when his mate didn’t accept him, whereas my wrasse injuries healed in a few weeks as you said. Who knows maybe someone else was beating on him afterward which slowed the recovery!

I agree, clowns are often pretty tough.

He seems to be doing pretty good. He ate last night and already has a favorite spot in the tank. Hopefully he won't be to much of an ******* when I add others in with him.

What will that do?

Adding any fish to a tank with a big Maroon Clown that’s been by itself for a while is going to be problematic. The acclimation box will serve two useful purposes for you.

If you introduce fish via the box, it will give you a chance to gauge the clown’s reaction, and give the fish time to get used to each other. This can sometimes help getting new additions into a tank less painfully.

It will also serve as a quick way to pull a fish if the introduction goes off the rails.

Depending on what species you add, another strategy would be to put the clown in the acclimation box when adding new fish to the DT.

What would prazi do for infection?

PraziPro is generally used for pests, etc but also as a preventative. I had a gold nugget clown that had a run in with carpet anemone. Fins were all roughed up and eyes were foggy. Friend rec PraziPro and within two weeks was looking good, eating and back to normal.

That actually sounds like flukes, the cloudy eyes and tattered fins could be indicative of them. Which would explain why prazipro helped it.

Praziquantel is primarily a dewormer, not an antibiotic.

Get a roomy acclimation box and keep it handy. Trust me, you will need it ;)

Besides helping reduce aggression with new additions by letting them check each other out, also makes a handy trap if you ever need to catch a fish ;)
