I will try to keep this as brief as i can but I want to provide details so I can get some good answers. I recently aquired a mated pair of maroon clowns. they almost immediately established a territory in a live rock cave in my 30 gallon reef. The female has now dug out the cave almost to the bottom which makes me think they may be preparing to breed. I also got a 7" BTA with them but they are never in, or close to it. It has moved from its rock to the top of the tank so Im thinking my 4 x 39W t5 lighting isnt enough for it. The only other livestock is a feather duster, clean-up crew of nassarius, cerith and hermits, xenia, finger leathers and GSP. The tank has a 10 gal sump with a large skimmer. Flow comes from the sump return, a large HOB filter with some mechanical filtration, and a bio-cube powerhead. It has been established for almost a year and is heavy with coralline algae. I have a little problem with some macro-algae but not serious. I also have a population of pods established and about 30# of live rock and a 3" deep sand bed.
Ok now the questions. I am considering getting rid of the BTA to reduce the bioload and make it safer for my corals. Would this effect the clowns mating? And, would there be sufficient food in the tank for the fry, or should if look into starting a rotifer colony? Any help would be appreciated. I have done a lot of breeding in freshwater over the years, mainly african cichlids. But, I am fairly new to saltwater.
