If you buy two clownfish, do they usually pair up? Or would it just have to be a thing of chance that it happens?

They will pair up eventually but not that fast, it might take them months or years.

If your trying to make a pair. It's best to buy one that's a little bigger than the other. Also try to buy when them young. When mostly likely haven't sex yet. The bigger of the 2 will be female. Could take a year or so depending how old they are when you picked them up.
I would buy same clownfish. They are breeding different clownfish but leave that for more experience breeder. Your chance are better ... They are a few books that can help you .

I've found that clowns pr quickly, almost immediately. They won't spawn for a year, but pr quickly. Getting juveniles makes it easier for them to pr.

It is possible for mismatched pairs of different species to mate - the "blood orange" clownfish is a hybrid between ocellaris and maroon clowns. I wouldn't think it's guaranteed, or would always go smoothly, though.

It works better if they are in the same complex, i.e. percula/ocellaris.
