I will be getting the RedSea Max-E 170 later this month (super excited!!). I have been doing a ton of research and watching a ton of videos and it seems like many systems have a filter sock/some sort of physical filtration. I know you can upgrade the system to add a sump, but wasn't planning on it, at least initially. So my question is, is the skimmer enough to remove the waste? Why do we need a sump with filter socks if the skimmer can remove waste? Is it just another level of filtration that really isn't necessary?

Just looking for more insight. Thanks in advance!

The sock will take out the larger things that will not go into the skimmer. The skimmer is for more of a micro filtration. You can get different Microns of socks for the sump.

Intank sells a rack for this tank you can fit filter-floss

Been doing research on this tank can’t decide this or the reefer, by any chance do you know the actual dimensions of the display excluding the back sump?

The Max E-170 is 24 inches L x 22.6 inches W and the Reefer 170 is 24.5 inches L x 20 inches W. They don't really give you a measurement for the back sump section on the Max E-170.

You can compare any of their tanks using their comparison tool.
