Petco ordered me in a “huge” gold maxima clam, for only $29.99! So I figured I’d take a chance at clams since it’s so cheap, could I put him in my frag tank, like would he attach on the egg crate fine or do they need sand/ live rock to attach to?
And since it’s big I don’t have to feed it really correct? I turn off all the flow in my frag tank and feed reef roids that floats around the tank for a bit, that should be enough feeding for him or do I need to buy other stuff like oyster feed and other foods?

Found this thread :)

I don't think egg crate is an appropriate material- they need rock. But there are also special "Clam hammocks" made pretty much for Maximas :) . They have a nice curve that will prevent the clam from falling over

Maxima, lover of light, don’t need to feed except light.
If you wanted to feed time to time, I’d use phytoplankton cloud, no water movement, just over the clam.
He will pump it in, but not required.

Only ever kept them on the rock work, but if you want to be able to move him easily, try sitting him on half a clam shell.

Mimosa clam sitting on a flat piece of mortar that I made, it didn’t like the clam hammock.
BB tank it is sitting on the bottom, has grown a lot since acquired approximately 7 months ago.

Do you have it covered in sand or rubble or anything? Or just have the clam sitting on the plate and that’s all? That’s what I plan on doing

It’s just sitting on the flat Marco pad I made. Very happy, it can open all the way. The clam hammock it didn’t like, deep and couldn’t open all the way I’m guessing. I don’t use frag plugs either, I make mini Marco pads and glue those to the structure. Works very well. BB tank.

It hangs over the front, no obstruction and can’t fall from a rock.

It’s on the bottom front and to the side about 150 par using apogee MQ 510
