Maxima/Giant clam question?

They do take in ammonia and because fish breath it is always present. A test kit shows a very small ammount of what's actually there, so to believe that you have 0 ammonia is silly unless your tank is dry. On that note I was under the impression they were after the trates and fwiw. I have a maxima that I've have for 11 months and a crocea for about a month both doing well in a couple month old bc29. Although IMO my filtration is there, the last tank I had that the maxima was in was crap and the clam was one of few things I could keep alive. I think clams are much easier than people give them credit for. If you are confident in your skills then why not try it. I would have quit long ago if I gave up at every small problem. The thing that's helped me the most is having a calander next to my tank where I write everything tank related

When your clam sucks in several times what it is doing is trying to clear it's gills because the food you are feeding is too big in size for it to take in. The nutrients a clam consumes from the water column are so much smaller than what you are feeding. I forget the numbers on the size but I can remember that they are microscopic, almost invisible to the human eye.
Good to know... I do not try to direct feed it though.... so, I am assuming this is a normal reaction when I broadcast feed the corals? As for fish waste... there should be plenty...and I'm happy to know that I inadvertently added something to help the system... I Hope

By saying that when you feed your tank the items that you do and your clam pumps you are sounding like you are implying that the clam is feeding. And are you saying that your fish don't pee or poo? Mine do and when they do they let off ammonia and yes this is partially taken in by clams. Sorry, I don't have time this AM to look for the links "late for work" but if you search on the matter you will find it.

If you were talking to me....of course my fish Pee and Poo... lol. I'm just happy to know that my Maxima is doing it's part :) and I am assuming that the clam Pumping is a normal reaction that hopefully is not damaging as I do have to feed the rest of the inverts in the tank. I'm late for work too. GTG.... I'll be on later this eve :)

Another question. What's the best veggies to put in the refugium? I already have rubble rock with a lot of Coraline Algae. Going to take a tooth brush and scrub the Coraline into the refugium so it would go back into the display tank and blast the spores in there.

I am aware that any animal that has photosynthetic algae living in its tissues (including corals) can absorb nitrogenous waste from the water to feed their algae, but this is at such small increments that the statement made that all a clam needs is ammonia and light is very misleading to someone who knows little about marine biology and reef aquariums. That is in fact not all a clam needs. It needs calcium, magnesium, and a carbon source, to just name a few.

I'm sorry, but when you repost someone's quote and say that there is "misinformation" when there isn't and then make a comment that is highly inaccurate. I'm not ok with that. And the fact that clam farms will dose ammonia as a fertilizer to get 10,000 clams to grow faster doesn't mean a clam in an aquarium needs more than the small amounts that your aquarium automatically provides. I personally think you were out of line skinz78.

Clams are one of the most hotly debated creatures we keep in tanks and there is a good discussion going on here with lots of good info.

No need to get bent because someone disagrees with you. No one is out of line here.

Ok after reading the posts over again I now see that I responded to both lofty and otter mistakenly thinking that the posts were by the same person, so I'm sorry for implying that otter suggested feeding them. But I still stand by my response to the Derasa suggestion.

So once again, otter I a very sorry for responding to you about the clam feeding comment. It wasn't intended for you.

I totally agree with you on clam farms dosing ammonia for accelerators growth, ive actually gotten some maximas in the past that had orange shells that i think was from some sort of ammonia dosing at the clam farm.

Thank you skinz78 for the apology and for clarifying. I feel like an ****** for jumping all over you for it. I also agree with the derasa assessment. I just think its a better choice for a beginner than any of the others. Although, I urge people not to keep them at all until they are prepared.
As you probably know, many people will do as they please no matter what we advise, so I try to give the best options for the best possible success. Luckily, these clams are coming from farms now and not from wild populations.
