I have the older designs.
The 2 issues I had, are related to each other. First, the motors spin fast enough to move a lot of water. However, they have very little torque. So they have a difficult time pushing past a bit of algae (or nori) that gets sucked into the impeller. But this still isn't my major concern.
If you take the gyre apart to clean (or soak in vinegar), and then have to put it back together, it can be tricky. It's easy to get the big impellers misaligned because they fit into rubber/silicone O-rings rather than being threaded. Any misalignment, by even a little bit, and the motor can't overcome the drag.
My perception of the gyres is that when they work, they can do a great job. But I found they need cleaning too frequently compared to other wavemakers and they are a much bigger pain to reassemble and make run.
All that said, maybe newer models are better. I don't know. And maybe other are better at maintaining them. But I have Jebao, Maxspect and Ice Cap gyres sitting on the shelf in my reef room.
