I have never used the Gyre pump
I have used the Vortechs with my 180
I started with (2) MP40s since that is what Ecotech suggests, I was disappointed with the results even at 100% output. The flow would stop @ about 2-3ft, I have since sold them and now have (2) MP60s which I am very happy with. I would rather run a more powerful pump(s) at a lower output than a smaller one at a higher output.

Everything about the need for chaotic / random flow is because we never had anything that could replicate real currents... chaotic flow was the best we had to eliminate dead spots... Majority, of all reefs are laminar flow... Yes, the current changes. But that is very subtle compared to what our tanks do with all the direct flow prop power heads we load into them. Even when the currents are extremely turbulent near shorelines the current is still laminar...
I think the time where pumps creating gyre's are king on opposing sides alternating current direction has began and the chaos theory will fade...

I run two mp40s on my 100 gallon. I get very good flow in the center of my aquarium, but not as great towards the side walls of my system. I want a gyre, but I have every intention of running all of them together. I'll run them all on low speeds though. I could probably drain half the tank with all of that flow.

In my 48" 90 1 wp40 at 40% kills the gyre...
I do not think the gyre should be mixed with conventional power heads....
The only way I can picture it working is if your power head is positioned so it blows with the gyre... trying to go against the gyre negates any benefits...

Probably depends how you mount them. My mp40's are mounted on the sides. If I did a gyre I'd probably want two of them. I'd have a lateral gyre from front to back, with horizontal flow coming from the mp40's. That's a lot of money to spend though, so I doubt I'd do it. The gyres look awesome, but I'm happy with "just" my two mp40's. Lol

I had an mp40wes, mp60wes, if you have the money buy an mp60wes its the newer style its alot quiter than the mp40wes...now I have a tunze and a gyre I was a little disappointed with the build quality it some kind of silicone that was all over the spinning thing and hard to clean places that crap made a mess so much of an inconvenience I expected more for it being at that price range that shouldn't have gotten to me in that condition now I had to wait for a replacement..but the pump works well so far it brings up all the ditritus from the bottom of the tank really well and I am only on 40% power will see how well it will hold up...so if you do get a gyre make sure check it good..
