Hello all. Ive recently purchased a xf230 gyre off of eBay to create more flow on the surface of my 6’ 120 gallon. At first I had a binding issue where the fins where stuck, I got that sorted out by cleaning the pump in vinager. Got the pump going but it has a noticeably pretty loud hum past 50%. Is this normal? Or should I return and just buy new.

I purchased an XF 230 not long ago (new from BRS) and it is pretty quiet at 50%. If the one you have was bound up when you got it (I am guessing used) I would say there might be some neglect issues with it and that is the cause of the noise. Something I have noticed with DC pumps is when ran wide open they tend to be a bit noisy verse lower speeds they are quiet. At 40% mine would not bother me even if I were going to sleep. My suggestion is if your budget allows, get a new pump and if a 230 wide open provided the right amount of flow, get the next size up and run it at a slower speed. Its better for you, gives you power to spare and you are not running the pump as hard. For a 120 gallon 6 foot long tank I would go no lower then a 250 and get the second head to run on the opposite end.

Thanks for the reply. I have 2 mp40’s on each side going at 65 percent on reef crest mode and with the xf230 at 40 percent I get some major flow on the bottom. I was going to purchase the rugged propellers anyway so maybe that will fix the noise. Thanks again.
