MaxSpect Gyre

I have a Gyre 150 on my 180 gallon tank (5' long) and I have it on constant at 50-60% (still finding the sweet spot). I really like the deceptively large amount of flow I get out of this relatively small pump. Im running a pennisula tank, so keeping cords out of the display was a big deal for me, and this pump combined with the flow I get out of my returns is enough for the sps in the tank to really show great polyp extension and movement. You do have to have your rockwork more or less centered to have the gyre work properly, as a "rock wall" type scape would diminish the water movement rate. I've heard a lot of people complain about paddles and other issues, but I bought mine in November, and its been running quietly since, even attached to 3/4" acrylic. Its a little more difficult to disassemble than some other circulation pumps, but nothing the average reefer cannot handle. In this video, you can see the water flow throughout the tank, even though I was shooting it for lighting purposes. The return pump is not on in this video, so all the flow is coming from the gyre. Note: if you use small grained sand, it will cause a sand storm. Im using Tropic Eden Reef Crumbs and there is some movement in the top layer, but its settled down significantly since.

Thanks for the video. I have a cyano problem, partly due to dead spots. Rather then spend another $400 on a Vortech, I was thinking of getting the 150 and attaching an MP40 to my back wall.

I've also been running my 150 since November on my 250g. It's 66x30x30 and the pump is amazing. No dead spots in the tank. Mine may only run at about 75%. I've also ran it in all the modes and switched it up with the different paddles for the alternating modes. It does loose a little effectiveness on my tank when i run the alternating paddles but it would work well for a slightly smaller tank in that manner. Either way, it was a much more affordable method for me than two mp40's or mp60's. The controller is a bit lacking in my opinion but they will work that out in time, and it's not enough to make me not recommend it.

I have a 202 gallon 72x27x24 and have just one Gyre.
My returns are divided by 2x outlets of 1" and max return is only 1300 gal/hr.
The Gyre is connected through the APEX with a Module-box from CoralVue that will be hit the market soon.
First I had it running on the gyre's own modes but with the APEX you can program Vortech and Tunze modes too.
I have it running since about two weeks on a Tunze/Vortech schedule and can't be more happier.
But really the schedule you can program is timeless if you have the module-box.
I really like that I have a night mode back that reduces the flow during the evening/night hours.
Oh, before the Gyre I had 5 MP40's on the synchronic schedule.

Ben,

You and I have spoken before. I was the one that had the tank issue with Planet months back. My tank is identical to yours (almost). With the nightmode, is there a timer or something on the controller or is it manual for now? I have my Radions and Vortechs on a Reeflink. I plan on moving my MP 40's to the back wall and get the Gyre.

I have a few questions:

1. Are you using any of the Mp40's still?
2. Where did you have the 5 MP 40's set up in the tank. Any pics?
3. You have 1300 gph in flow? I have mine set up at 1200 and the water in hitting the eurobracing. Is yours?

The Gyre doesn't come standard with a night mode on the controller, this Apex module is something that Coralvue build them self to have the opportunity to control the Gyre through the APEX.
No I'm not using any MP40.
IMO it will change the purpose on the flow from the Gyre.
I had 2 MP40's on each side of the tank and one from the back.
If you go look in my build thread you might find some pics with the Mp40's on there.
The 1300gph is just my return pump, not sure what my Gyre has for flow in my tank but I'm not focused on that.
All I focus on is to hit the sweet spot on color, PE and growth from my acro's, I learned over the years that # are there to have a basic start or if things go wrong to fall back to basics.
Never chase my # as a few minor adjustments you get back into it.
If you advance you just focus on health from color and fish.
For example when I come home and take a peek for two minutes I can tell there's something wrong, and if so I'll go to the bottom of it.
That almost never happens though, but I just know that i had a dead snail or crab by the amount of brown algae on my glass and yet i need to look from the side view to see if I have any.

One will also need the vdm module. So we are looking at cost of vdm module and the cost of the controller that attaches to apex via vdm.

This will get expensive

If you don't have a Apex or any other kind of Aquarium controller it will not make sense you get this Module, just stick with the standard controller that came with the Gyre.
If you have already a aquarium controller like a Apex, than all you need is the Icecap Gyre module.
You connect that to your main units either v1/v2 or the v3/v4 ports and your ready to go.

I have apex light. If I have ports then I am definately getting the box.

The Lite won't have them.
Apex lite was also discontinued since 2014.

Not sure if you can do it with a breakout box.

HAHAHA............... I know what you guys will put on your list for Christmas!!

Love love love my Gyre :) I have the smaller version on my 75 and I run 60%. I have peninsula style rock formation. When I first set it up I got a bit of a Nitrate spike due to all the detritus it pulled from my rockwork that I had been unable to blow out with a powerhead. I'm super happy with it. Nothing ever seems to "settle" in the tank. Just blows around until eaten, snatched up, or pulled out by the overflow.

I am interested in getting the 130 for my 40 breeder but eventually I'll be upgrading to the Deep Blue 80 frag/breeder tank, would the 130 still be enough flow for that size of a tank? Seeing people using 1 150 on 200 gallon tank I'd assume it would be fine but wanted to see what ya'lls thoughts were

I am picking mine up today. Before I throw my MP 40's up for sale, is it counter productive to put the 40's on the back wall with the Gyre on the sides?
