I have the r420r 16,000 over a 24"x24" 60 gal cube. I've had it a while and it's seemed to do well. Just wanted to see if anyone else has one and what their settings are. I have a mixed tank of lps, few sps, and softies.

My settings:

07:00- W:0 B:1
12:30- W:30 B:35
16:00- W:50 B:60
19:30- W:45 B:65
21:00- W:15 B:25
22:30- W:0 B:0

If anyone has comments or suggestions on my settings please tell me. I'm up for any help/criticism. This has shown decent growth but some corals don't pop as they used to.

How are your corals doing? Seems kinda low for the settings. I was using razor as a replacement light for a bit on my 60g. I planned on using it for a week tops, but stuff happens and I used it for a couple months. I don't remember my settings but I do know I ended up going pretty high on the settings with no issues. I do know, I was at 100% on the blues and around 50-60% on whites at high point.

It is perfect for Sps little high for lps
Too much ours mine 00 at 21...
25 cm high from water

Mine are running at
blue white
0800 00 00
0900 50 00
1430 80 30
1530 80 30
2200 50 00
2300 00 00

Currently increasing white by about 1% every 2 weeks, really easy to burn coral with these white, trying to get to 50% white max at 1430 but not sure if I will make it. At current levels my S GIG anemone that I have had for 7 years is thriving. rest of corals are growing well.

Corals seem happy but the sps don't have the color that they did when I got them. I felt like it was low but didn't know if I could turn them up higher and not mess up my lps.

What size tank?

@TreyC2010 Get a light meter to see what you are putting down on the tank currently.

I run my (160w) Razor at close to 100% and still only get around 40,000-50,000 lux at peak.

For a 20" deep tank, you probably need it to be set higher. You may be getting as little as 30,000 lux at the surface – which is hypothetically an OK number for corals – but by the time you're at the bottom of your tank I bet levels are pretty low.

In any event, turning it up will help everything look brighter because it will be brighter. :) You just want to go slow and control the process using a light meter. Don't make a change of more than about 2000 lux at once and I'd wait at least a couple weeks between changes.

Don't start increasing the lighting until you have checked for other problems though! Lights are one of no fewer than three factors that directly influence coral "happiness":

Light, Water Flow and Nutrients

You can have too much of some, too little of others or unstable of any of them and corals will not like it in one way or another.

How are your NO3 and PO4 levels and what is the tank's history with these?

How is your water flow?

Flow declines as corals grow out, and declining flow can make a big difference on their metabolism. It may simply be time to refactor your current flow solution or add a new pump.

i tried running higher, closer to @AdamNC settings, but sps got bleached out and the BTAs started shrinking and bleaching
I added a couple Current Truelumen led strips to improve spread and spectrum.

That comes from too big a lighting change, too quickly under unfavorable nutrient and/or flow circumstances.

But I still like those strips! :)

But at that height, their impact is really reduced. They are about the same LED array as the Orbit Marine (actually a little less powerful) and those only put down about 150 PAR at 6".

If you mounted them on the tank, they'd potentially be adding around 400 PAR. (Blue's don't rank on PAR the same way, but the same attenuation affects them!)

A side-benefit of tank mounting is that they no longer put so much light into the room either – more into the tank, less waste! :)
