Hello All, long time lurker, first time poster. I'm considering purchasing the Maxspect R5-200 and was wondering if the current version is the same version from lets say 4 years ago? Has anything changed with this model in the past few years. If I purchase a model from 4 years ago, will it be an inferior/outdated/obsolete version of the current model?

The only difference that happened to them in the past several years is that the old version had the adjustable LED strips along the lengths' of the front and back. You could aim the LED strips by pushing the top of the edges down or up. That would help aim the red/green/white supplementation light where your wanted it.

Sometime around 2017-2018, the diffusers over the main LED's also changed, as did the cooling fans. The older version just had the main LED's open to air, and the new version has them covered with sort of a frosted plastic. On the new RSX model, you can update the firmware through a micro USB in a slot new the control knob/wheel. Even thought the new version has onboard wifi, you still have to purchase the seperate IPV6 module to link the light to your router for true wireless control with your phone, iPad, etc.

PS--I have a 300 watt one for sale that's about 1.5 years old and listed in the classifieds. Couple scratches on the top, but it's a screaming deal considering they're close to $1000 at BRS right now--with the IPV6. Comes with the light and the IPV6 module. The only problem is, it costs $200 to ship it through UPS. $25 of that just for being an oblong package. But, if you can find someone who can pick it up and ship it down to you, I'm just up the state from you in Sacramento.

Here's what it looks like on a tank:
