Mccoskers not well after prazipro

Hi All

So I just recently added a mccoskers to my qt this past fri. He was doing good, swimming eating etc. This was my first time using meds in a qt. After reading about using prazi I decided to try it this time.

I have him in a fluval evo 13.5 along with a green clown goby. The goby was added the day before. I dosed 2ml prazi to the tank and had the returns pointed to the surface for more agitation.

He looked a little lethargic but ate. Was spending a lot of time in a pvc elbow. I just walked in to check and he looked dead. I gave him a little prod and he swam away but isnt looking good. Breathing a little heavy. I just checked ammonia on an api kit and was showing 0.25. I know they tend to read a little ammonia usually. Also have a seachem alert badge in there and its showing 0.

I did a 25% wc last night. So he was in the prazi water for a day or two. I cant recall if I did the prazi sat or sun.

Anything I can do? More water changes? I just added a bag of chemipure to try and clean the water some more.

Active life of prazi is 24 hours. Consider treatment done and do a 50-100% water change.

Prazi will need to be repeated in 5-7 days to kill any worms that were eggs during the first round. Threat fir 48 hours then water change.

I’m going through the same thing with a magnificent foxface. Did really poorly 3 days after Ifirst dose, so did 100% wc. second round 6 days later was literally 36 hours then 100% WC. Back up and swimming around and good colors within 2 hours of changing water

You say "really poorly" my guy is literally laying on the bottom of tank. Not looking good. Was yours that bad? I dont know if this is normal. I just started my rodi. Ill do a 50% change in about an hour. Hopefully he can pull thru.

Yeah- full night sleeping colors, laying as far under a pvc elbow as it could. Middle of the day so my basement lights were ‘full’

With prazi, it's beneficial to provide additional aeration to the tank. Prazi can be harsh on wrasses, but I would follow the provided suggestion and do a water change immediately and throw in an airstone or point your return at the surface.

I just pulled him out and put him a cup with water from my dt. Good idea til I can do a wc or no?

Define ‘cup’.

Smallest I’d do is a 2 g bucket, or a 5, with an air stone . Heater too if it’ll be more than an hour or your house isn’t particularly warm (<73-75of)

I used a red cup just to get him out the medicated water for a bit. But put him back in the qt. Was a little more lively. But still not good. I dont have an airstone and my only other powerhead crapped out. Half hour til i can do a wc. Well see

Prazipro contains praziquantel and oxybispropanol. The oxybis is what's used to keep the prazi in solution, it uses some of the O2 in the tank. So, yes, a powerhead aimed up to the surface, actively rippling the water surface will help offset the O2 depletion. The dosage on the bottle is 2.5 mg/L. This dose is a bit high. You can dose at 2.0 mg/L and it will still do the job on all but Prazi resistant flukes.
An alternative is to use General Cure (powder). The dose of praziquantel is at the 2.0 mg/L level and it works just fine. The other benefit is that it being a powder does not have the oxybis robbing the O2 from the water. Very easy to use. And it also contains the Metro. So your fish are getting both prazi & metro. This is good as some parasites are resistant to one or the other, but not both.
