I am going to be doing my first large water change on my tank this weekend and have two 44 gallon Brute trashcans. I will be mixing saltwater in one and using the other for the discarded tank water. I was just planning on marking a spot on each and filling to that spot so I put back exactly what I take out. I know some of you have used a 5 gallon bucket to mark off exact measurements, but I will probably not have time to do that this week, so I was wondering if anyone knows, (or can measure) how many inches from the top of the can is 35 gallons, 30 gallons and 20 gallons?

On a side note: how do you dispose of the old water? I will be using a small amount to do water changes in my coral and invert QT and was just planning on dumping the rest out in the yard, (I am in the desert, so no grass) since I cannot image it is good for plants or anything else. Just curious...

Thanks in advance!!!

I run the same set up with the two trash cans. I have never marked lines on the cans because it was easier to mark lines on the tanks.

I have been dumping my waste water from a 120g and two 35's out the back door for 3 years. We were planning to put a patio there one day. Just this year I have seen a small section that does not grow weeds. I have to imaging that there is near 20 pounds of salt per square foot back there. It must sink down mole holes or something. The plants out of the line of fire seems to be unaffected.

It is not much more work to go out the side door and dump the can into the gutter. I think my long run plan is to just attach a drain line on the discard can and let it run and turn into a syphon feed into the tub or toilet.

I have moved to a more Triton like method and don't change all that much water anymore, so anything is possilble.
