I have a Apera PH60 digital meter - and it drives me crazy.
I calibrate it with 7 and 4 and then test the calibration solutions right after and they will be off - I don't mind if it's off .02 or so but sometimes it's more.
New proble and fresh calibration solutions.

What do you find gives you a consistent, reliable reading?

PH probes suck, but the logging ability is awesome. I use the probe on my Profilux and then check with the Hanna.

0.02 is nowt. Why worry about such a tiny margin?

If it's within .02 I don't bother with it. But it can be as much as .06 or higher at times.

I forgot about the Hanna - is it reliable and easy to use? Can you calibrate it?

As far as I know it is reliable. It is easy to use. The sample is a bit large for me but I don't use it often. I never truly trust any test or equipment. I let the tank tell me the tale.

I used several older lab instruments, such as from Orion.

The most important thing in the meter itself is 2 or more point calibration, and the ability to read to at least 0.01 pH units.

This has more:

I use the apex probes as well as the Hanna marine pH checker. The checker is nice since you can get standards tor ensure your checker’s readings are correct:
