So, I got this meat coral Saturday for $75. I've never had one before so I have no idea what's wrong. This is the 2nd time I've seen it, what I'm assuming is expelling it's zooanthellae. I have a hard time keeping LPS. What could be wrong? Could the light be too intense? It came from a 500 gallon with AI lighting running the David Saxby schedule.

Temp: 78
PH: 8.0
Alk: 8.3
Cal: 430
Mag: 1350
NO3: 31.1
PO4: 0.08

Biocube 32 running Steves LEDs. 95% blue and 10% white.

Lps low light corals usually. Steve’s leds can make some pretty strong stuff. 95% blues does sound pretty high to me but I’m not completely familiar with your lights

These meat corals want around 100 par

$75 is amazing for this acantho

Knowing the PAR is critical to keep acanthos happy. They prefer low PAR at 75 - 100.

At 70% intensity, I think it's too bright regardless of the lights. I'm resistant to automatically say you need to lower your lights because there may be other corals.

Do a PAR reading then adjust lights accordingly.

Also buy plastic pipette. Squeeze the bulb before you put in water, gently put in acantho's mouth, release the bulb, and should pull waste. Repeat multiple times until waste is minimal in acantho's mouth.

I really dont know much about the acanthos other that it sure is pretty lol. How much does this one go for usually? It also has purple stripes, if it ever decides to expand all the way out. I just bought a par meter and should be here the beginning of the week. Hopefully this will help! Thanks for the info!!

My collection ranges from $400 - $2,600

Average piece is $800 - $1,200

Holy crap! I really scored then, if it lives. I actually got this meat, a 10 head hammer, 2 red discoma mushrooms, hairy mushroom, rasta zoas, some kind of blue acro frag and some bright orange sps coral for $160

How did you get all of these corals so cheap?

A local fish store?

Yeah, the cheapest Acanthos I've seen (either just green or green and blue-purple) are like 135-170 for one, so $75 for a nice one like this is great price.

Local guy, going through a divorce, tearing his, in wall, 500g reef down so he can repair the hole and sell the house. He was selling everything for super cheap. It was full of coral and large tangs among other fish. Only thing he said he was keeping was the Fiji rock.

Makes sense acanthos & corals don't go for that cheap

But he had to get rid of it

Yeah I knew the meat was a little up there. I really lucked out and he hooked me up. The 10 head hammer has 8 more babies growing right now too. I wish I could've gotten more from him but my little tank limits me as I already had coral in it.

75 bucks for that is an absolute bargain!

I have 7 Acanthophyllia in my reef. It’s not unusual for them to expel that stuff now and again.

I’ve found meat corals really prefer cooler temps. 75 degrees to a max of 77. This is a low energy coral that prefers low light (no more than 100 PAR), moderate flow (just enough to jiggle them) and cooler temps. Regular feedings of zooplankton help too
