Mechnical Filtration

Filter socks are easy to change, easy to wash (in a washing machine) and cheap. I run my system with just a filter sock, cheato in the fuge and a skimmer. No GFO, no carbon, no phosphate reducer, no other filter media and very few water changes (after the tank matured). I consider myself a heavy feeder. Oh, and my rock flower anemones have produced babies 3 times over the last 2 years!

There really isn't need for lots of crazy filtration if you maintain the tank well.

Ive been a "just jump in" reefer for 7 months. Ive kept freshwater for 10 years. If I want my tank to look awesome, it has to look as good as yours.
I've been running a 40 gallon breeder with a cheap hob coral life filter/skimmer,rated for a 30 gallon aquarium, and some seaweed that just sits there and soaks up nitrates. Also some bio rock cylinders in front of a power head behind some rocks in the corner, live rock and live sand, and do water changes and I can absolutely not believe reefing would show progress like this for me personally.
Man that is a gorgeous tank!

Thanks!

I have to admit, over 15 years and after having had a 75g mixed starter tank, a 180g mixed reef, a 120g sps reef and a 60g shallow reef tank full of local collections (4'x2'x14"), this 2'x2'x20" 40g tank has been my favorite. I've worked on getting mostly zoas and Rock Flower Anemones (all easy to care for) that fluoresce light well. When the house is dark and the tank is under all blue leds it looks crazy awesome. Every time I walk into the room in the early morning or evening and look at the tank I'm just blown away with how much color just screams out of the tank! Now I'm thinking I may take the 16g 'spare' tank (sitting next to the DT in the photo) I made with leftover glass from my sump build and turn it into a rock flower anemone only tank. I just need to get a better led (more PAR) and rework the plumbing so the small tank shares the sump/refugium with the cube... maybe this summer...
