Hello reefers, so I was wondering, when should I run my carbon and GFO and for how long? I want to grow mainly LPS and a few Zoas. As of right now I have no fish and corals and won’t have fish until they are qt. I won’t get corals until a few months later. Should I run any media right now, even without fish? Or should I wait for the uglies to come in to run it? Thank you!

Take your time.

Personally I'm not a big fan of running carbon or GFO as a regular practice. I will use it when I need to because something has gone wrong in the tank. That said, I haven't used either in more than 6 years. It just sits on my shelf waiting to get used.

Just for info purposes, my tank is 90g with a 25g sump/refugium. I run a filter sock, chaeto algae and a skimmer. I do a 20-25g water change every 2 or so. I have 10 smallish fish, a host of other inverts (2 sea cucumbers, several serpent stars, 2 cleaner shrimp, lots of snails, ceriths, chitons, a few small local clams, limpets, slippers, an emerald crab, a decorator crab a few sponges, 1 tube anemone, 30+ rock flower anemones, 3 maxi-minis and 2 curly-cue anemones).
