I just can't wait! I'm hoping Reilly can take me out to the lake and show me how to jerk a big bass out of the water!

Wow, that's a big'n!
Unfortunately Reilly will be gone fishing to his local fishing club tourney on 27th. You are welcome to fish in the big pond behind my house :) or you can go fishing with him another day, but I cannot promise you any big fish like that (even if you stick the fish near the camera like that ;) )

I have a pork shoulder roast I could cook and bring. Just cut off whatever you want.
If you want to do that I'll get the chicken from Publix so there will be a variety

I'm glad that this group is growing by the day.
As I mentioned I am a newbie with just a fresh water 10 gal tank moving to saltwater/reef.
I have not decide what tank size I will be going but I have decide to start buying some of the stuff that is needed no matter what size I pick.
So here is the first question:
I just did a quick search google for 'saltwater refractometer amazon' and for the same refractometer the price varies from ~$20 to $40. Am I missing something? Which one should I buy?
Do I need to get the calibration solution or can I use RO/DI Water?
Thanks,

I recommend getting one with ATC (automatic temperature compensation) and I also recommend getting the calibration fluid. IMO it is best to calibrate it as close to then intended usable range as possible.

I have both a refractometer like what you are looking at and a digital refractometer. The regular one became difficult to read as I started needing reading glasses, hence the digital one. I used to have no problem reading the numbers. Someone told me that my refractometer has larger numbers and lines than his, but I still have a difficult time reading it without reading glasses. Obviously refractometers are not made all the same...

Here is a tutorial on calibrating a refractometer:

I used to recommend that all newbies check out the past issues of Reefkeeping magazines. They contain a wealth of information written by experts in the field.

Here are some of them:

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/past3.php
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/past4.php

Although they were published a long time ago, the most of the information are still viable/relevant except for some of product reviews (since new equipment keep coming out.)

Enjoy!

I'm brand new to the crowd too. Speaking for the others w/o permission, I believe you are more than welcome. Check out the other thread for the address, time, and other info.

Edit: NM the info is right here in this thread.

NARC is no longer an active club. Not sure when it stopped but it was at least a year ago.

NARC has been inactive for awhile (maybe for 6 years or so), but we are trying to start it up again. There are no dues. We are an informal group. Everyone is welcome. We made a point of not having officers or a formal structure. We got together once a month on Saturdays for lunch and various activities (sandwich-bag frag swaps, demos, and kibitzing.) Other members and I felt it worked well that way. When other groups tried with officers, we saw in-fighting erupt, which led to the demise of those groups.

It's at 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 27th at my house (283 Old Overton Drive, Madison.)
The original info is located a few pages back on this thread.
